We’ve all been there: that last minute stop at the supermarket to grab the prettiest label on the cleanest bottle of wine, cut over a few aisles to grab the shiniest ribbon, and a bag (if time permits), check out, and show up to the party with the best gift ever. And while I will never doubt this foolproof system so many of us procrastinators have developed, there has to be a better way.
HOW TO BUY WINE AS A GIFT
Be reasonable. Yea, you may find a somewhat-okay bottle of “red blend” for ten bucks at the grocery store, but if this person means anything to you, you will spend that little extra to get them a bottle that they won’t ever stop talking about and beg you for again next holiday season.
CONSIDER THE SEASON
Winter and Fall seasons tend to attract bigger, bolder reds and full, creamy whites. Unless you know for sure Aunt Carol drinks nothing other than bone dry Sauvignon Blancs, look into oak-aged Chardonnays or deep red varietals such as Syrah and Cabernet Franc. These full, spicy, and smokey varietals also compliment many holiday dishes such as beef tenderloin with mushroom brandy cream sauce or duck fat roasted vegetables with chestnut millet crumble. (check out more recipes here!)
TAKE INTO ACCOUNT THE TYPE OF EVENT
Different occasions account for different types of wine gifts. For larger parties, consider buying large format bottles such as magnum bottles (1.5 L). Large format bottles are sure to make a statement and are sure to be a “Wow” factor.
Don’t ever be afraid to ask questions when picking out a bottle. Especially at our tasting rooms! All our staff is more than happy to answer any questions you may have, no matter how small. Asking questions not only helps when it comes to picking a bottle, but knowing a little bit about the wine you are giving makes the gift that much better.
CONSIDER A WINE CLUB
If you’re looking to truly impress this holiday season, a wine club membership is the perfect gift that keeps on giving! Carr Winery offers several types of wine club subscriptions ranging from shipments bimonthly to twice a year and from two bottle shipments to up to a case.
Whatever your strategy is to buying wine this holiday season,
Cheers to you and your family, from ours at Carr Winery.
