Located in the beautiful Los Olivos District AVA of the Santa Ynez Valley, Lyons Vineyard is a 10-acre vineyard focusing on Rhône varietals including Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Viognier.
The original vineyard was planted in 2009 with one acre of Grenache and one acre of Viognier. In 2017, Sarah and Skye Lyons purchased the vineyard and hired Ryan Carr to take over the farming and planting of additional acreage. Over the last two years, Carr has planted three more acres of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah. The vines are planted 5′ x 3′ (making it an ultra-high density vineyard). Such tight spacing leads to competition between the vines, producing very small berries with dark skins. The soils offer a good mixture of sandy loam, clay, and ancient riverbed, with rich nutrients and great drainage.
The 2017 Carr Grenache is the first wine made from Lyons Vineyard and produced by Carr Winery. We produced only three barrels of this wine and aged it to perfection for 18 months in French oak. The first sip is fruit-forward with a hint of spice, followed by an intense structure and body.
