Paredon Vineyard
Paredon Vineyard is one of the few vineyards that is on the ocean side of the Santa Barbara mountain range. This vineyard is very special because it sits twelve hundred feet above sea level well above the marine layer. A breath-taking ridge helps to protect this site from the marine influence. Carr Vineyards planted the vineyard in 2000 with three acres of Grenache and four acres of Syrah.
Steve Berman and his partners were the original owners of the three properties that this seven-acre vineyard was planted on. In 2004 one of the properties was sold to a corporation in Asia and in 2006 another parcel on the property was sold to Richard and Penny Morales.
The first harvest in 2004 turned out to be quite a surprise. We would have never thought that this ocean front vineyard would produce the best Grenache we have ever seen hands down. The wine resembles Grenache from the Borossa Valley in Australia, dark and full of flavor. The red clay sandstone soil adds to the expression of the Syrah fruit, which creates a complex wine with hints of pepper and spice – a true characteristic of this cool climate vineyard. Carr Winery produces this wine under two labels Carr and Paredon. The Paredon label is owned by Richard and Penny Morales.
